Using fluorescence to investigate the multivariate functionalization chemistry of metal-organic frameworks

University of California, Berkeley
Standard
In this project we will use fluorescence imaging to investigate the spatial distribution of multivariate (MTV) functionalization in and their effect on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). By measuring advanced fluorescence properties, like the fluorescence lifetime or Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), we can gather information about the relative positions and the local environment of fluorescent groups far below the resolution limit of a light microscope. In particular, we want to study and compare two different functionalization methods for the synthesis of MTV-MOFs: (i) De novo functionalization, where the active group is incorporated during the synthesis of the framework and (ii) post-synthetic modifications, where functional groups are incorporated directly into the pre-formed scaffold.
Final report:
In June 2018 the group of Stefan Wuttke has met friends on the other side of the world. They have been visiting the chemistry department of UC Berkeley where they got to experience working with the father of MOF chemistry: Prof. Omar Yaghi. During this trip they both experienced the atmosphere working in his renowned halls while contributing their part to a mutual project. During their stay they had many discussions resulting in one review that will be soon published. All in all, this trip paths the way for current research projects together with the group of Omar Yaghi.
