Sustainable use of text-based AI systems such as Large Language Models (LLMs) is a key challenge. We are developing an intelligent scheduler that selects the most efficient and environmentally friendly large language model for each task. The entire lifecycle of these models is analyzed in our project ‚Costs of Intelligence: Sustainability of AI Agents‘ – from hardware production and development to training and real-world usage. Precise measurements of electricity consumption, water usage, and CO2 emissions form the basis for reliable sustainability metrics. Based on this data, the scheduler prioritizes smaller, more resource-efficient models for simpler tasks without compromising quality – significantly reducing the environmental footprint of AI applications.
