Our research project investigates direct communication and molecular links between the gut microbiome and the brain. We have previously shown that bacterial extracellular vesicles (bEVs) – small, membrane-bound carriers of molecular cargo – are able to reach the brain. Building on this discovery, the project aims to elucidate how these gut-derived bacterial messengers modulate immune processes within the brain. Using next-generation sequencing in combination with advanced bioinformatics, we will map transcriptional and spatial changes in resident brain immune cells following bEV-exposure. This interdisciplinary approach will provide new insights into the contribution of gut microbes to neuroinflammation and -pathology. The project combines expertise in microbiology, neuroimmunology, and genomics, fostering innovation and strengthening long-term collaboration between FAU and UCSD.
