In ideal thermo-electric materials the electrons have a high mobility to transport charge but the electrons and phonons are disrupted from transporting heat. Filled rare-earth Skutterudite compounds derive their excellent thermo-electric properties from a cage structure that encloses a loosely bound rare-earth atom. The special crystalline environment of these compounds provides a new setting for novel electronic ground states, including insulating and metallic behavior with strong electronic correlations, magneto-polar order and unconventional superconductivity. In this project we bring together our expertise in the study of novel ground states of inter-metallic compounds with strong electronic correlations. We especially focus on the use of new neutron scattering techniques and high hydrostatic pressures. We expect important insights in the unconventional superconductivity and quadrupolar order in these compounds.
