Exposure assessment is one of the most diffult tasks in environmental and occupational medicine. In contrast to estimates of external exposure, human biomonitoring can provide accurate information on suspected exposures resulting from all routes. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitious substances to which man is exposed in the environment and in the work atmosphere of several industries. Some of these compounds are classified as probably or possible human carcinogens. To our knowledge, only few data was reported describing immunological analysis of PAH metabolites in urine samples. It is the aim of the project to develop a fluorescence quenching competitive, homogeneous immunoassay in micro droplets (diameter < 100 µm) for sensitive detection of PAH metabolites in human urine samples.
