MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous RNA molecules, which post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression. By binding to specific mRNAs, miRNAs inhibit translation or lead to mRNA degradation. For the human genome more than 500 genes encoding microRNAs are curently known. The function of miRNAs in the adult myocardium is unclear. This transatlantic collaboration aims to combine unique techniques to screen mammalian miRNA libraries based on their function in primary cells. The resulting candidate miRNAs will undergo a complete cardiac validation ranging from in vitro studies and target identification to miRNA-transgenic mouse and miRNA-transfer in vivo.
