Research Areas
The Polymer-Optical Fiber Application Center (POF-AC) at the University of Appled Sciences Nuernberg is working on low cost polymer fiber optic (POF) sensors. The potential of POF-AC´s fiber sensor based on phase measurement has been demonstrated in several experiments and demonstration sites and has been published at various conferences.
The sensor, originally intended for structural load monitoring (SLM) has been successfully tested for human respiration monitoring, thus showing its potential for life science applications.
In order to improve the performance of the sensor or to couple it to a different sensor type, the PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) approach with wavelength coding shall be implemented.
Within this project PARC will develop a read-out unit suitable for the optimum wavelength range of POF and POF-AC in Nuernberg will provide simple POF sensors for first initial experiments. In close collaboration both institutes will explore potential designs for wavelength-coded POF sensors for various sensing applications.
