Phase-contrast X-ray is a promising new technology for imaging soft tissue with high contrast. With a novel grating architecture, imaging at clinically relevant high energies has been made possible using a table-top system. In this project, we aim at knee cartilage imaging using phase-contrast computed tomography. We will investigate the suitability of phase-contrast as a high-resolution alternative to conventional imaging methods, under boundary conditions like dose and image quality. In this project, the phase-contrast hardware and clinical expertise is provided by Stanford University, while image reconstruction and processing is conducted by the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. This project shall seed a longer term collaboration to explore this new imaging modality.
